Norton Shores is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 1,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon–Holland, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton Shores is located on the eastern edge of Muskegon Heights Township and borders with North Muskegon to the south, Grand River to the east, and Holland Township to the north. The first settler in Norton Shores was George Haggerty who arrived in 1824. Haggerty erected a cabin on a hill just outside of town. He died in 1828 without issue and his land became part of what is now NortonShores Township. Knoppers bought several hundred acres from Haggerty in 1830 and began farming there. John Purdy purchased another tract of land in 1835 which he used as his personal farmstead until his death in 1861. In 1850, three brothers - Nicholas ( Nick ), John ( John ), and Sylvester - founded what would become their largest business venture: The Northern Michigan Railroad Company. Their railroad ran from Norton Shores through Ionia to Grand Rapids and Port Huron primarily serving farmers and other rural residents along its route. The company operated for thirty years before it was sold to another group of investors in 1907; however, it continued operation as an independent entity until closed down by receivership four years later due to financial troubles. Nearby Hamtramck had been platted as a village by James Dixon Copley but no development occurred until 1873 when lumberman Royal Wernher announced plans for a milltown adjacent to Hamtramck that would be called NortonShore after him and his family's home near Hamtramck Lake; this led to actual development taking place around this time including over 50 homes built between1879-1885 within present day NortonShore limits In 1901-1902 two new schools were built within present day boundaries: Anson Schoolhouse on Main Street (now Waterford Road) west of town center where students children attend now while North High School stands across Harding Road northeast corner today which served students from 1870-1965; also buildings included Mayor's House which housed city hall during those days when that building wasn't replaced with the current structure until after 1945 In 1911- 1912 additionality block house was built one mile northwest of town center close thereto still standing today known as "Old Dutch House". This Block House functions both as courthouse/police station & jail facilities & also contains various historical items associated with early township life including 2 cannonballs found inside & 2 old nails used by builders
