Norton Shores is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton Shores is located on the southern border of Muskegon County and it borders Marquette to the north and east, Isabella to the south and west, and Holland Township to the northwest. The first people to live in Norton Shores were farmers who started growing crops in 1837. By 1860, there were six families living in Norton Shores. In 1870, a post office was established in Norton Shores, and by 1880 there were twelve families living there. By 1900 there were twenty-six families living in Norton Shores. In 1907, an act was passed that changed the name of Muskegon County from "Muskegon" to "Mnuchin". This change was made so that all towns within McNichols Township would become part of Mnuchin Township (except for Norton Shores which remained separate). The reason for this change was because McNichols had too many villages with their own governments (such as Grosse Pointe South) and not enough towns that could be called "towns". In 1914, when new state law changed how township names are chosen, Norton Shores became part of Mnuchin Township again because it had been vacant since 1907. At that time it included all of what is now Muskegon Heights except for parts of Holland Township which became part of Grand Rapids later on. In 1920 a school began serving students in NortonShore after being built by local citizens using money they raised through fundraising drives. In 1922 an ice cream parlor opened up shop here too making it one of only two places in town where people could buy ice cream commercially until 1978 when it closed down due to lack of customers during prohibition Era America! However, there are still many reminders that make up Norton Shores' history including its prominent brick courthouse which dates back to 1907; its stately banquet hall which was completed in 1922; and its downtown shopping district which features several locallyowned stores and restaurants as well as a variety of local historical museums such as the Northern Michigan History Museum and Area Museum.
