The town developed an extensive system of storage drums and vaults beneath its downtown buildings used to store munitions until they could be transported or unloaded safely into battle zones across North America. In 1945, after Japan surrendered following World War II, all remaining ammo stocks were destroyed by order of General MacArthur as part of his Operation Cartwheel strategy aimed at destroying any potential threats posed by Japan before it could rebuild itself again – an event that remains commemorated annually by Tenshin Dojima Memorial Park located just east of downtown Norton Shores on US Highway 231 near Mount Stroudsburg Road

The airfield served primarily military purposes but also hosted civilian pilots training for airline travel during peacetime; however, it ultimately ceased operations because it proved too difficult to maintain due to bad weather conditions which often interfered with fighter planes flying overhead; this airport designation has been reused for various purposes since then including Northwestern High School located east side off US 131 near Cadillac Boulevard). Fremont and his brother-in-law, Colonel George Hearst. The name Norton Shores was derived from ethnonym Nunataks (northern lights) which can be found near the site where it was first settled. In 1957, Norton Shores became one of five cities that were merged into the larger city of Detroit; however, its independent status continued until 1984 when it became an integral part of the new city government under then Mayor Coleman Young. In 2000, Norton Shores voted to become an official city once again within the newly formed Oakland County government; however, this vote failed to gain approval from all levels of government as required by law. As a result, Norton Shores has been without an official municipal existence since 2000
