Niles, Michigan is a town located in Wayne County, Michigan, about 12 miles east of Detroit. Niles was founded in 1824 as a small village on the north banks of the Locks River. The first car was produced at Niles by George Duryea in 1908. In 1925, cityhood was granted to Niles and it began to grow rapidly as a popular tourist destination. During World War II, Nile's largest employer during the war was General Motors plants in nearby Midland and Sterling Heights; these plants manufactured military vehicles and other munitions. After the war ended, GM moved its plant to Flint and closed it in 1978. The population of Niles has grown steadily since its founding; it now stands at over 22,000 residents.
