The first Europeans to settle in what is now Niles were farmers. The first post office established in Niles was called Albion in 1837; it moved to its present location in 1878. The City of Niles was incorporated on December 12, 1892. In 1916, General Motors started production at their new plant located south of town on the edge of what is now Midland Park Township. GM's plant produced lightweight trucks and buses until it closed in 2003 afterOutput had reached 1 million units per year by that time. In 1928, Ford Motor Company began producing cars here as well until they moved their operations to Dearborn Heights in 1971. Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Niles Township. In 1837, it was chartered as a town by the United States Legislature under the name of "Niles". By 1871, Niles had become an agricultural center with several thousand buildings and five thousand people. The city's growth stalled after World War II until its rebirth in the 1960s as a major industrial center with manufacturing and service jobs. The population reached 100,000 during the 2000 census. One of Niles' most significant events occurred on November 12, 1837 when General George Armstrong Custer died at Ft Washita near present day Niles. This event led to increased interest in farming in this area and caused many pioneers to move into Niles from other areas in search of new land to farm. The first post office was established at Niles on July 25, 1839 (from Canadian Village). The township was organized on October 14, 1850 under territorial legislation from Michigan Territory. By 1860, there were twenty-four townships in Michigan Territory with nine districts; each district consisted of one township plus one or more rural villages within its boundaries that voted for representatives to meet annually to discuss local affairs such as road building, bridge construction etc., but no town meetings were ever held because no money could be raised for such a purpose by local merchants or farmers themselves! On January 1st 1861 all these Townships were merged into Wayne County which also included Macomb County (northwest corner) along with Oakland County (southwest corner). In February 1865 while still part of Wayne County two men named John Ladd and James Irvine set up camp near present day Gaylord on Muskegon River about forty miles east of Detroit Lakes on what is now known as State Road 627 East just south of Crystal Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area! They became known as "The Hard Times Boys" because they refused paymaster duties required by law for soldiers stationed at Fort Mackinac outside Detroit that winter! Their actions helped spread news about free labor opportunities available westward through MI so settlers began arriving from New York City specifically looking for land east of Grand Rapids! This movement started what would later be called “The Great Migration” which brought many families westward overland between 1865-1915 including my own ancestors who came through Marquette Bay when their ship “SS Don Giovanni” arrived at Sault Ste Marie about 1840!!
