In 1865, during the American Civil War, nearly all residents left for reasons unrelated to hostilities: political rows over war issues and increased taxes caused by troop movements throughout the region; then-president Abraham Lincoln called up federal troops to suppress a slave insurrection near Flint–a decision that inflamed local passions further; some families moved inland for other economic opportunities or away from military service areas altogether (the largest single exodus began near Battle Creek); and few people returned until after 1865 due to disease outbreaks spread by Union soldiers through Michiganders traveling southward for food supplies (). This event helped solidify U.S.-Canada relations and helped set the tone for later negotiations between America and Canada over trade issues. In 1862, when Union forces captured Fort Dearborn after a three-year siege, they called upon General James Kappenheimer to lead an attack against the fortification. Kappenheimer succeeded in breaching the fortifications but lost many men during their attempt – including one of Niles’s own citizens – Samuel Morse. This event helpedconfirmed America’s commitment to military efforts against slavery and contributed to increased anti-slavery sentiment throughout much of America following World War II.
