The first settlement in what is now Niles Township was made by French Canada fur traders in 1796. In 1814, Nicholas Knoppers settled in what is now Niles Township. He built a log cabin on the present site of the City Hall building and named it "Knoppersville". In 1828, John Richardson founded Richardson's Mills on the banks of the Ottawa River in what is now downtown Niles. The mills produced cotton goods until 1893 when they switched to manufacturing automobiles and other products. In 1836, James Haggerty laid out a town square block including present-day Park View Boulevard and First Street east of current State Road 40 (now Woodward Avenue). He called it "Nile". A post office was established there in 1837; it remained open until 1861 when it became part of Detroit. The township was organized from part of Wayne County on March 14, 1840; its first mayor was Jeremiah Denton (1853-1864). On July 1, 1850, most of Wayne County south of Detroit became part of Jackson County as a result of the Michigan Union Act which created Kentuckiana (later renamed Michigan). On December 12, 1854, much of Jackson County north of Detroit also became part of Niles Township as a result of an act by Governor Anthony Comstock. In 1865–66 work began on creating Washtenaw Harbor between Saginaw Bay to the east and Lake Huron to the west through what are now Walled Gardens and Midtown neighborhoods on Southfield Peninsula near downtown Lansing; this project ultimately failed because many sections were never completed due to Civil War hostilities between Great Britain and America over control over navigation within Saginaw Harbour waters. However development did occur for years alongshore where Port Huron lies today with businesses like Ferris Wheel company being built next door to old amusement park such as Exposition Park across from Field Museum while Washtenaw Harbor still exists today just offshore

The city of Niles was incorporated on July 1st 1978 by merger of four villages: Albion Heights (the easternmost village), Alger Heights (the westernmost village), Commerce Heights (a small control village north of Alger Heights), and Groveland (an amalgamation including both Albion Heights and Groveland). At that time the city had a population of only 2 people! On September 3rd 1988 another merger took place when Grand Rapids successfully merged with nearby Hollandale Village/Southfield Village Combined Statistical Area to create a new metropolitan area with a combinedpopulation over 10 million!
