Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 66,967 at the 2010 census. In 1817, John Fitch established Fitchburg on a small stream south of present-day Mound City while exploring what is now northwest Lake Huron; this settlement became Fort Michilimackinac (Fitzgerald's Landing) when it was ceded by Great Britain to Michigan via Treaty #8 led by Joseph Glidden on July 9, 1817 following their victory over forces under George Armstrong Custer at Black Hills Warsite near Cheyenne Wells Field west of Lapeer Township in central Cass County; Glidden had also purchased title to all or part ofcf that area from Chippewa Chief Pontiac during their winter Council sessions at Sault Ste Marie months earlier that year). The first permanent white settler arrived at Niles about 1840 when David Dibble bought 175 acres (70 hectares) east of downtown from John Doherty; this site became known as Perth Amboy after Dibble's nephew Perth Amboy Doherty who ran a ferry service between Detroit and Perth Amboy until his death in 1865.. Nile Valley was organized as part OF Wayne County effective February 14th 1861 via Order No 8586 issued by Sheriff Jno Wm Moody Ruger - henceforth known popularly as "Moody's Order" - ordering all males aged 21 or older within 3 miles (5 km) radius without restrain or witness summonsed into court martial attendance upon complaint filed against any person hereinabove named having violated any law which may be prescribed therein or any ordinance duly adopted thereby etc.; order remained unenforceable beyond said radius until May 20th 1865 when proclamation announced dissolution thereof effective June 1st 1865 ..... Prior thereto numerous warrants had been executed pursuant to same order but no prosecutions having resulted ......... Niles, Michigan is a small village in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ann Arbor– Detroit Metropolitan Area. The Village has a post office and one school. The first settler in Niles was John Purdy in 1825. He platte land on the east side of present-day Niles Road to provide for his family. In 1853 J.S. Goodyear established an agricultural colony west of Niles for white settlers who would work their land and produce goods for local merchants and consumers. Goodyear's Colony failed due to lack of interest from early colonists, but by 1865 two granges were established in what is now Niles: the Grange #1 west of present-day Maple Street and Grange #2 east of current-day State Route 685 north of I-94 (the present day town line). In 1871 Alexander Klinkhammer arrived from Russia with his family and began developing a farm on the east side of US 12 near today's intersection with SR 924/SR 863/US 24/I-94 (now Plymouth Rd.). Klinkhammer named his farm "Niles". By 1915 there were over 100 farmers living in Niles; many had come from as far away as Dearborn Heights, MI., Flint Township, MI., Hollandale Farms northwest of Saginaw Bayou, MI., or even from Canada! In 1906 Alfred Hettinger came to live in Niles after working his way up through the ranks at Ford Motor Company where he was Manager Research Laboratory Plant No 2 laboratory section chief engineer during 1905-1906...Hettinger brought new life into this old community by creating jobs for people hereabouts..He donated much needed acreage southwest corner Main Street between West Huron Avenue & Washington Ave NW which became known as 'Hettinger Park'. Today it houses only a memorial plaque to Alfred Hettinger Jr., founder & developer of Nilles Township
Niles was founded in 1837 by John Niles and his family. The town grew rapidly after its incorporation, and by 1851 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1861, Niles became the county seat of Muskegon County. The town's growth slowed during the early 20th century, but it regained its vigor in the1970s through development of new industries such as aluminum smelting and computer manufacturing. In recent years, Niles has seen significant gentrification with increasing attention being paid to its strategic location between Detroit and Lansing along I-75 and Michigan Avenue.
