Gun parts history in Niles, Michigan can be traced back to 1851 when the first gunsmith in Niles was established. The town's first firearm, a six-chamber shotgun, was made by David H. Smith and Chas. W. Ladd. Mr. Smith died in 1884 but his workshop continued to operate until 1907. In that year, the town’s first rifle was also made at the locality’s original gunsmith shop by Wm. Fenton and Sons of Niles; it consisted of a two-strap barrel with an octagon head stock and a single shot action with a navy blueserial number on the breechblock (see photograph). The rifle was used for deer hunting and had a ported muzzleloader receiver with checkering on both sides of the barrel. It is interesting to note that this rifle differed from any other pistols or rifles manufactured in Niles until after World War II when shotguns began becoming more popular among Americans due to their increased firepower potential (Fenton rifles were not exported outside of America). From 1907 through 1912, three different arsenals were located in town: one operated by the United States Naval Militia under Governor John Peltz; another by Armour Manufacturing Company; and finally, an armory operated jointly by United States Army & Navy Ammunition Plant No., Inc., National Rifle Association (NRA), and Armour Manufacturing Company as part of Project Hula which aimed to reduce production costs for artillery ammunition by using less expensive raw materials from American suppliers ( Armour Manufacturing Company also produced revolvers cased inidelab green celluloid material)).
