Today much of what made Niles so attractive to settlers has been replaced by housing developments such as L’Anse aux Meadows Golf Course & Resort; shopping centers such as Sears Tower; educational institutions including Western Michigan University; professional sports teams including the Red Wings (now Dijon American Hockey) and AHL affiliate Lake Erie Monsters; light industrial operations such as Hancock's department store closed down two decades ago but remains preserved as an attraction known locally simply as Hancock's Building. Today there are few if any businesses that can trace their roots back more than 100 years old – something that makes for a unique community flavor even when things are going bad.
