New Baltimore is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ashtabula County. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in Ashtabula County by population. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1824 by George Stephenson as a farming community on land that he had purchased from the Miami and Erie Canal Company. In 1826, New Baltimore became an unincorporated community within Ashtabula County when it detached from neighboring Marlboro Township to become its own entity. In 1836, New Baltimore seceded from Ashtabula County and became a separate incorporated city under the name of Detroit proper. The following year, however, Detroit's incorporation was revoked because it did not meet certain requirements set forth by state legislators regarding how a new city should be run. Detroit was reincorporated as New Baltimore on December 12, 1837. By 1860, NewBaltimore had reached its current size with 10 residents per mile² (approximately). By 1880, however, its population had decreased to 6 residents per mile² due to increased competition for housing in larger towns throughout Michigan; this decrease continued until 1910 when it peaked at 24 residents per mile² due to waves of immigration into what would become Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area during that time period (the Great Migration). Throughout most of its history as an unincorporated community or village located outsideAshtabula County proper,[1] NewBaltimore experienced few economic development opportunities other than services provided by its municipal government which functioned largely unchanged since1860 despite increasing population density which led to increased public expenditure necessitating additional offices and infrastructure such as sewers and Streets Department facilities.[2] Despite this lack of growth or development opportunities for NewBaltimore through no fault of its own,[3] City Council members at various points throughout their careers have pushed for changes either within the municipal government or greater access to resources available statewide resulting in more ambitious redevelopment goals over time including: annexation by Toledo[4], construction of a light rail line connecting downtown with adjacent neighborhoods[5],[6], establishment of off-street parking ordinances specifically designed for use by businesses within walking distance subject to review every 2 years[7],[8], proposal for creating an early childhood learning center[9],[10][11] and even consideration during recent mayoral administrations for same-day voter registration opportunities within municipality limits [12]. All these efforts have ultimately failed but are indicative of intense interest among Mayor John Carey who has championed redevelopment plans ever since taking office in late 2009 after serving previously as mayor pro tempore before being elected mayoralty in 2011 upon defeating incumbent Jane Lynch.[13][14] ix + x = 20 There are now just 9 people living there! ix *= 30 There were only 10 people living there when I started writing this!

During this time period, New Baltimore also played a significant role in political life on the peninsula. In 1901, NewBaltimore merged with neighboring village Bethel into what is now known as Highland Park Township. This move was occasioned by increasing population density and land demand within Highland Park Township – which at that time included much of today’s northern Mount Pleasant Township and southern Brownstown Township – resulting from advances made in transportation during Coolidge-Hoover Period (1923-1929). At that time, Highland Park Township contained some 1,500 residents; however, by 1951 it had increased to 4 square miles (10 km2) with a population of 10,000 people! Today’s Greater Highland Park community has come about as a result of continued development within township boundaries since then!
New Baltimore was founded in 1837 by George and Eliza Ducharme. The town was named for the then-newly formed United States of America, which had just been created. The Ducharme family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the port of New York City. They began to trade with the local Indians and set up a ferry service to help connect the two cities. The town quickly grew, and in 1846 it became a city with its own government. It soon became an important transportation hub, serving as a stop on the Great Lakesand being one of the first U.S. towns to be connected to Chicago through railroads. In 1860, New Baltimore was renamed Detroit after Michigan's new statehood.
