New Baltimore was founded in 1824 as a small village on the eastern banks of the Saint Joseph River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had become an important center for trade and commerce. By 1850, New Baltimore had reached its peak as a commercial and industrial center. However, during the American Civil War, many of New Baltimore's businesses were destroyed or damaged by Confederate forces. Despite this setback, New Baltimore continued to grow in population and importance until the late 19th century. In 1892, the city was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant because he had helped to create Michigan's Union government that year.
