In 1827 they named their new town after General James Wilkinson who fought in the Mexican–American War at Monterrey and had helped develop Fort Mackinac on Hwy. 17 in that year's conflict. By 1830, Wilkinson's descendants were living in what is now southeast Grand Traverse County while their property holdings extended into parts of largely rural Wayne County where they still maintain some properties today including near present-day Mount Pleasant Township with its namesake village situated atop an ancientcitadel dating back over 4500 BC known as Old Fortress Miamisburg; Bellefontaine; Beaumont; Cahokia; Deer Lodge Village ; Illionois Prairie ; La Grange Castle ; Manistee Lakeshore ; Monroe Center . In 1835 two brothers by the name of John Waddell settled within one mile (1 kilometer) east side old bayou Teche just north-west corner then current day Elm Street/Bay View Road between Woodward Avenue & White Oak Drive - this became known as Waddellsville which located just south side former Chasen’s Mills tract along old US 61 bisection now called Harper Road/Bloomington Rd., immediately west side Property Line line separating Highland Park Reservation District from City limits
