New Baltimore, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Eastern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 33,711 at the 2010 census. In 1846–47, Andrew Gregg established an agricultural colony near present-day Midland; this led to what is now known as Gregg’s Township being organized into Kings County two years later that year under Territorial Governor Augustus Biddle King Jr.. In 1849–50 James Wetherill founded Whitefish Point on Mackinac Island; this led to Wetherill Township being organized into Oakland County two years later under Territorial Governor Lucius Noyes Jr.. By 1860, NewBaltimore had about 20 businesses including five banks and one insurance company employing over 200 people according to US Census data On December 3rd 1861 unincorporated area called "New Baltimore" became part of Lansingburgh Township through Act No. 579 passed by Legislature at its regular session held at Lansingburgh Hall August 12th 1861 pursuant thereto On December 3rd 1862 act no 612 authorized creation of village named "New Birmingham" within Lansingburgh Township for economic development purposes

New Baltimore, Michigan was first settled in 1837 by John F. Wright and his family. It is located on the east side of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, about 25 miles north of Detroit. The town quickly became a center for agriculture and commerce. New Baltimore was named after George Washington's hometown of Alexandria, Virginia. In 1881, the city seceded from Michigan and became its own state entity. After several years of growth and development, New Baltimore experienced a decline during the early 21st century because of increased economic competition from nearby Detroit and other metropolitan areas in Michigan. However, recent investment by local entrepreneurs has revived the downtown area and support for cultural attractions such as the arts and nightlife has helped to resurgence New Baltimore's economy.
In 1836, the first permanent settlers arrived in what is now New Baltimore, Michigan. The town was established on a small peninsula that juts out into Lake Huron. At the time, it was one of the most remote and isolated communities in Michigan. The town quickly became famous for its natural resources - including timber and coal - and its strategic location at the mouth of the Menominee River. In addition to its isolation, New Baltimore also enjoyed some of the best fishing in Michigan. During the late 1800s, NewBaltimore experienced some major growth and development. It became a center for industry and commerce, becoming known as "The Hub". In addition to its importance as a commercial center, NewBaltimore also saw increasing population growth due to expanding farming and ranching operations in nearby counties. This increase in population caused problems for local officials, who were not able to keep up with demand for infrastructure and services. In 1951, following years of planning by local officials, New Baltimore was officially renamed Detroit after Mayor James Kieft's decision to celebrate Detroit's centennial anniversary year. The name change marked an important transformation for Detroit – from a sleepy agricultural community struggling to support itself during Prohibition-era prohibitionism to one of America's largest metropolitan areas enjoying rapid economic growth during the post-World War II period.
