In the early 1800s, New Baltimore was a thriving community located in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Centered on the falls at the confluence of the Penokee and St. Clair Rivers, this post-Revolutionary town thrived as a mill town, cotton ginnery and fur trading center. firearms were not common in early America, but they did exist and were used for hunting and warfare. It is interesting to note that both New Baltimore and many other frontier communities relied heavily on muzzleloaders for their defense against Indian attacks. This reliance helped make muzzleloading shotguns one of America’s most popular firearms. Muzzleloader shotguns became an important part of American militia forces during the War of 1812 because they could be fired quickly and easily from long distances without fear of being missed by enemy troops or friendly fire. For years after the war ended, muzzleloading shotguns continued to be used by American militias for home defense purposes until finally becoming obsolete around 1850. The popularity of muzzleloading shotguns led to their mass production beginning in 1857. This process began with creating new shotgun models that could be produced more cheaply than earlier designs using a combination of handwork and automated techniques. By 1860, nearly all American shotgun manufacturers had adopted breech Loading Systems (BLS), which allowed guns to be fired safely by loading them through a side opening into which cartridges were inserted manually via thumb operation

New Baltimore was founded in 1837 by General John C. Frémont, who led the Michigan Campaign of 1837. The town was named for Brigadier General Nathaniel Banks, U.S.A., who was killed in action during the campaign. New Baltimore became a part of what is now Detroit after it was annexed by the city in 1847.
