Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Muskegon River. The population was 46,854 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Muskegon County and the second most populous city in Wayne County after Detroit. The metropolitan area had a population of 1,085,408 as of 2018. The town of Muskegon was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1695 and became part of Holland's North America possessions following its conquest of that country in 1701. The name "Muskegon" was derived from two Ottawa words meaning "place where no one lives". In 1837, the town took its present name from General Daniel Montgomery because he had donated land for a military post near what is now downtown Muskegon Heights. In 1849, while still under Swedish control as part of Lapeer Township (later Gratiot Township), Muskegon became an incorporated village when voters approved a measure to make it so. After becoming an unincorporated community again in 1861, it obtained township status on November 3, 1871 under then-Govt. Andrew Johnson's Executive Order No. 518 which granted township status to villages with more than 6500 residents that were not subject to county government tax assessment or have other special privileges such as power to build fire departments or establish schools without paying taxes to the county government. On February 26th 1906 Verne Troyer set out across Lake Huron from Port Huron on his way eastward towards Mackinac Island when he lost his life during what has been called "the greatest cross-country adventure anyone ever undertook." As a result of this tragedy and others like it during that time period dubbed "The Great Lakes Pioneer Century", much needed national attention was given to transportation issues on those lakes and better understandings were gained about how they worked including advances made regarding logging roads and culverts; both muscling into place long before they would become widespread throughout North America later known as highway construction techniques today! During World War II several thousand men and women serving with various United States Army units were based or stationed inmuskEGon (and vicinity) resulting in some growth within the local economy which resulted in housing developments being built there such as Fort Knox Park along Saginaw River north side just east of current day Ford Ave./Old Main Rd.; also Grosse Pointe Farms/Strouds Woods development located adjacent to our Municipal Airport; Garrison Barracks/Wright Air National Guard Base located south side just west off US 131 between Flint Hills Rd./Franklin Dr., Little Canada Creek watercourse flowing through town center directly behind old Masonic Temple building; Beechwood Shopping Center anchored by Sears & Roebuck stores adjacent thereto located across former Iger Paper Mill site now occupied by Alliant Energy company subsidiary Midstream Partners LLC). Today many remnants remaining from those days remain such as Old Wright Air National Guard Base Museum open daily 9am - 4pm featuring artifacts related thereto plus numerous other items available for public viewing inside & outside museum walls... !!

Muskegon is a city in Michigan, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. The first white person to live in what is now Muskegon was Nicholas White and his family in 1810. The area that is now Muskegon was known as part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan until 1817 when it became part of Wayne County. In 1827, muskegon land sales began and by 1830, over 60 families had purchased land in what is now Muskegon Township. In 1835, two brothers named John Czaja and John Siemaszek started a lumber business on the south side of town. Over time they developed other businesses including a bank, shoe store and hotel. In 1861, they sold their business to Alexander Ladd for $2 million dollars which made Muskegon one of the most valuable cities in America at that time. In 1875-1876, steel production began with Isaac Aspinwall producing what became known as "Aspinwall's Steel" at his mill on the north side of town. This led to heavy industry growth such as shipbuilding and automotive manufacturing which continues today with companies like Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation located within walking distance or less from downtown Muskegan!
In 1835, the first white settlement in Muskegon was established by Capt. John Saginaw and his family. The area that is now Muskegon was part of the Onondaga Nation until 1797, when it became part of the land grant to Antoine de la Salle by King George III. In 1824, a group of French Canadian farmers founded the town of Marquette on what is now Greenfield Township. The first stores were opened in 1830 and a post office was established in 1832. In 1865, Muskegon became a city and its first mayor was John Prentice.
