He built a cabin near what is now downtown Muskegon Heights and started trading goods with local Native Americans for goods such as meat and clothing. As more settlers arrived, prices for food decreased and trade grew more commercialized; this led to increased competition among farmers for land and resources which caused some conflicts over land ownership between those who owned property outright and those who leased it from others. In 1828, John Saginaw founded Saginaw Township while also building his sawmill on the Rouge River northwest of downtown Detroit; this mill would eventually produce around 100 barrels per day (bpd) of lumber which helped support Saginaw's growth as an agricultural center during the 1830s and 1840s until mills began closing down due to technological advances such as steamboats capable of Doing much faster than horses at cutting logs). The Dunhams operated a grocery and general merchandise business until 1870. In that year, they relocated their business to what is now Bascom Square. They were succeeded by J.D. McConnell & Sons as the city's largest retailers from 1871 to 1899. In 1898, prohibition led to a decline in sales at McConnell & Sons stores; however, the company continued to operate until 1935 when it merged with JCPenney Stores Incorporated.
