MUSKEGON, MI – Muskegon is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 34,844 at the 2010 census and is the county seat of Muskegon County. The name "Muskegon" comes from an Ottawa Indian word meaning "to squish." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Muskegon Territory arrived in 1795, during the Northwest Indian War. The area was part of Pennsylvania until 1797 when it became part of Michigan as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. During its early years, Muskegon was primarily agricultural - crops such as corn, wheat, potatoes and soybeans were grown.
