Muskegon is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 48,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County and home to the University of Michigan. The city is named after General John Muskegon, who fought in the War of 1812. The first Europeans to visit what is now Muskegon were French traders in 1688. In 1795, Ulysses S. Grant visited and recommended that Detroit be founded as a base for trade with Great Britain because of its strategic location on the St Clair River between Upper Canada and Lake Huron. George Washington also visited Muskegon in 1796 while on his way to battle British forces at Battle Creek against Major General Edward Braddock's army under General James Kautzschlager (1746-1824). In 1814, Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1800-1871) explored the area around present-day Muskegon Heights before founding what became Custer Township on July 10, 1814. On November 2, 1815, three weeks after Fort Dearborn was destroyed by Ulysses S. Grant's Invasion of choice during their Indian Wars Expedition led by General Winfield Scott (1802-1865), Custer's group attacked a Native American camp near modern-day Eastpointe on Mackinac Island located about 12 miles north of present day Muskegon Heights. A total of 11 men were killed; five whites and four Indians were killed or captured including Custer himself resulting in an infamous massacre which has been called one of history's most shameful events ever committed by Americans against Native Americans In 1816 Treaty #8 was signed between US President James Kautzschlager and several representatives from the Kickapoo Nation here at Eastpointe near Mackinac Island following a series of negotiations lasting more than two months amidst bitter cold weather conditions with snow cover deep enough to coverage trees up to six feet above ground level From then until 1840 there was no permanent European settlement within muskegon township limits other than occasional smallpox infections brought over by travelers from neighbouring townships such as Clinton and Monee . No roads or bridges existed across any major rivers making it difficult or even impossible for farmers and merchants to get goods into or outmuskegontown without traveling downriver through Lansing or even farther away Ann Arbor

In 1925, as part of a larger effort to centralize government services in Grand Rapids, Muskegon Heights was annexed into that city and its boundaries changed again with the addition of land around Old Fort Mackinac Bridge which formed what is now Monroe Township. In 1957, Stroudsburg-based General Motors Corporation established a large research lab on land east of downtown Muskegon which continues to be used today by GM Research Laboratories Inc.. That same year saw significant growth at nearby Grosse Pointe Farms when Chrysler Corporation opened their largest manufacturing plant in North America there, followed by Ford Motor Company's Plant 1 shortly thereafter which increased production rates at both plants while displacing other businesses along the way; these changes helped create what is known today as Midtown Detroit area dominated by major automakers between I-75 and Woodward Ave., anchored by GMR & Co.'s facilities on One Campus Drive near Gratiot Avenue/Stroudsburg Pike/Church Street with other major employers including Kmart (now Macy's), JCPenney (now Sears), Dick’s Sporting Goods (now Best Buy), Sears Tower and several restaurants including Tim Hortons and pizza place Papa John’s Pizza across Woodward Ave./I-75 beginning around 1970 surrounded by high-rise buildings such as Great Lakes Center for Health Sciencesformerly known as University Hills Hospital
