On June 14th 1970 – only 6 years after incorporation as an official city- MUSKEGON HISTORY DAY WAS ANNOUNCED! That event saw the unveiling of City Hall which still stands today (just east off I-75). Inauguration ceremonies were also held within this building including Mayor James Ewing taking oaths as Mayor/President pro tempore/First Vice President; Mrs Gertrude Cagle sworn into office as clerk public record; Commissioners Rossiter and Kapp swearing into office as commissioners; Dr Livingston appointed probation officer for mental patients; Dr Dickinson appointed land commissioner for sewage treatment plant construction etc., among other activities! Today MUSKEGON has numerous skyscrapers along I-75 such as One Financial Center & Gibson Building being built right outside downtown while new developments are continuing upriver near US 131 & Grand River Drive NE., such as Scripps Watermark Placeogenics Campus redevelopment project underway now inside former A&W Brewery across from Comerica Park

Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the Wayne County, Michigan area and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 87,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The current mayor is Karen Weaver. The first documented mention of Muskegon was in 1695 by French traders as "Mocqueton". In 1701, John Montresor and his group of fur traders founded Fort Michilimackinac on what is now Muskegon Heights Boulevard in present-day Muskegon Heights. The fort served as a base for operations for their exploration and trade activities along the Great Lakes region. In 1705, the British captured Fort Michilimackinac from the French and renamed it after their military general Arthur Stirling Macdonald (1562-1628). In 1814, General Anthony Wayne invaded Canada during the War of 1812 and took control of Detroit with its strategic location on Lake Erie. After being sacked by Canadian forces in November 1814, Detroit became an American city under occupation until January 15th, 1865 when it was surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant's army following two days of street fighting that ended with 598 dead and 14 wounded Americans compared to just 27 Canadians killed. This event is also considered to be one of the bloodiest battles in American history due to intense firefights taking place throughout downtown Detroit including Burning Place which saw over 100 casualties within minutes Detroit experienced rapid growth due to industrialization beginning with Valeo’s production line at nearby Mallett & Reno Street between Washtenaw Avenue and Woodward Avenue in 1868 which led to increased traffic congestion across downtown streets as workers passed through valves attached directly to furnaces creating an intense heat environment that caused serious fires Furniture manufacturing continued becoming more important during this time but grew increasingly automated leading many companies such as Dorman Company closed down during this period leaving Muskegon without any major industry or jobs During this time period there were also several large social changes including enactment of Prohibition which had a significant impact on local businesses especially those near river mouths like Muskegon where smuggling became an essential business activity
In 1824, the Muskegon Land Company was organized to purchase land in what is now Muskegon County. The company had 11 investors and purchased 282 acres of land from Solomon Northrup for $4,000. The first post office in Muskegon County was established in 1830. In 1836, the county seat was moved from Grand Rapids to Battle Creek and the name of the county changed to Muskegon County. One of the first churches in Muskegon County was built on State Street (now Roosevelt Road) in 1840. In 1850, a sawmill on White Lake began producing logs and lumber for local markets. In 1861, a railroad line was constructed between Battle Creek and Detroit linking the two cities. This led to an increase in trade and commerce withinMuskegon County.
