In 1827, James Hutton purchased land east of present-day downtown Muskegon from Chief Joseph Chilton for $3 per acre ($40 per km²). This started what is now called Hutton Park – an important agricultural area that still retains some features from early settlers. The first churches were built inmuskegon during this time as well: First Presbyterian Church (1828), German Lutheran Church (1829), Methodist Episcopal Church (1830), American Baptist Churches (1831), and CongregationalistChurch (1832). By 1840, most manufacturing had moved out of Flint and into nearby Detroit; however, muskEGon continued to grow rapidly due largely to its fertile agricultural soil and easy access to transportation routes such as rivers and canals. Demographics began changing again around 1870 when large numbers of black people came through rapids along the Huron River before flowing south into Indiana; many workers became displaced by new industrialization elsewhere in Michigan but did not move away from Muskegon until after World War II when racial integration began there too. The city's economy has grown steadily since then with heavy emphasis on service sector jobs including healthcare and education services; construction ; IT; retail sales; information technology; automotive manufacture
The Muskegon community was founded in 1837, when a group of men and boys led by Captain John S. Webster started the first store in what is now Muskegon Heights. The town grew rapidly, reaching its peak in the 1850s with over 100 stores and businesses. But prosperity came to a standstill after the Civil War; village residents were unable to find work due to disappearing manufacturing jobs in Michigan. In 1871, however, local businessmen petitioned for incorporation as a city, and Muskegon became one of the first Michigan cities to be incorporated. It experienced another boom period during World War II, with many factories opening up in the area for war production. However, following the war's end, economic hardship set in and Muskegon struggled through the 1960s and 1970s. But starting in the late 1990s, things began to change for Muskegon as new entrepreneurs stepped up to fill some of the town's vacant storefronts and revive downtown areas that had been neglected for years. In 2002, Mayor Dave Heineman proclaimed January 15th "Muskegon Downtown Day" to celebrate this history and current resurgence. Today, downtown is home to a number of popular restaurants and nightlife venues as well as several museums including The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA).
