Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 49,828 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Grand River between Detroit and Saginaw, about 54 miles (87 km) south of Lansing, the state capital. The town named for French explorer Nicholas-Jacques Conte began to be populated in 1834 by fur traders from Upper Canada as part of an effort to open up what were then British North America to settlement. The first post office was established in 1835, but it remains unincorporated today. The village of Muskegon Heights was platted in 1836 by John Wertz as part of a land grant he had received from President Andrew Jackson for his services during the War of 1812. Wertz named his community after Jean-Baptiste Muskegon, one of Jackson's lieutenants who served with distinction at that time. In 1840, James Purdy opened a store and hotel in Muskegon Heights which became popular with travelers because it was within easy walking distance both to Detroit and Saginaw. By 1850, there were five stores and six hotels operating in Muskegon Heights; all but one closed by 1870 due to lack of business or competition from other towns on the Grand River valley east of Muskegon Heights.. In 1847, George Washington Carver settled near present-day Kalamazoo with his family before moving westward into what are now Oakland County and Wayne County.. In 1865, Carver founded Battle Creek Township which later becameMuskegon County.. The township developed agriculture as its mainstay until World War II when industry took over; mills built here include those mentioned earlier such as Wertz's Store & Hotel and Purdy's Hotel & Residence which remain extant today along with many other buildings associated with early musketry history inmuskeegee National Forest

Muskegon is a city in the Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. Prior to its incorporation as a city in 1868, it was an unincorporated community known as "Niles." In 1814, traders from Sweden and Norway discovered land adjacent to where Muskegon now stands on the east side of the St. Clair River. They named their new find "Muskegon" after one of their number, Axel Nordtvedt (1774-1836). In 1824, the US government purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land north of Niles for $5 per acre ($10 million today). This area became what is now Muskegon Heights and part of downtown Muskegon. The town site's first settler was Nicholas Rohrer (1801-1864), who built a cabin on his farm there in 1825. A second cabin was built by German immigrant Johann Gottlieb Schroeder (1800-1868) in 1830; it remains standing today as Easton Courts Apartments #2A. The village of Niles had been established along this same line some time before that but never grew very large due to lack of development or marketability concerns. WhenMuskegon incorporated as a city on Feb 14th, 1868 under the name "Niles", much larger plans were formulated for its growth potential and future racial integration into the larger community . This incorporation marked not only significant progress for Muskegon but also demonstrated that white Southerners would no longer be able to dictate how black citizens should live or work within their own state - something which had long been forbidden by Indian Treaty Act provisions implemented since 1794 despite repeated pleas from both parties concerned about Native American autonomy andensions within their borders
On July 1, 1837, the first post office in Muskegon was established. The town was named for General John Muskegon, a hero of the War of 1812. In 1853, Muskegon became a city and on November 5, 1861 it merged with Grand Rapids to form the new Michigan City.
