When Muskegon County was organized in 1824, it consisted of only a part of what is now Michigan. The rest of the state was divided among the Five Civilized Tribes and the Ottawa Indian Nation. One of the first things county commissioners did when they were elected was to purchase land from the Ottawa Indians for their own use. The first bipods were made by farmers in Muskegon County and they used them as walking sticks. By 1830, there were enough bipods being made in Muskegon County that buyers could be had for $5 each. In 1835, a man named James Dixon built a sawmill on South Union Street in downtown Muskegon. This mill became one of the leading manufacturers of bipods in Michigan and throughout the United States. In 1840, two brothers named John and William Fenton started making bipods at their farm near South Union Street in downtown Muskegon. During World War I, Cadillac produced munitions for the US military and played a key role in Allied victory. during World War II it produced vehicles for the US military and again played a major role in Allied victory. In 1949 Cadillac merged with General Motors Company (GM).
