Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 34,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Windsor metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Muskegon were Native American people who lived near what is now downtown Muskegon and on other parts of the peninsula. A group of French fur traders settled in 1795 in present-day Muskegon Heights and founded Fort degrasse as an outpost on Grand River to trade with Native Americans living around them. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army burned down Fort degrasse, killing all its occupants except two Frenchmen who managed to escape with their goods to Canada. The town was platted in 1814 by John Pemberton as a trading post for fur traders travelling through his territory along the Great Lakes region on their way to Grosse Pointe (Detroit). In 1835, General John Cavanaugh established a military fortification called Fort Cassia at what is now Ottawa Street and West Main Street in downtown Muskegon due to fears that American Indian attacks might occur during Prophet Elijah's Meridian Campaign against British forces west of Lake Huron. This fortifications lasted until 1840 when it was abandoned because its purpose had been supplanted by Fort Dearborn closer to Chicago; however, early evidence suggests that some Canadian troops garrisoned at Cassia may have fought skirmishes with American Indians before its abandonment. In 1846, Henry Ford started construction on hisown small village called Highland Park just east of today's Dearborn Avenue in what is now Oakland Township; he named it after his father-in-law David Dudleyfield Ford (1796–1868), also one of independence movement leaders from Detroit who had helped found Highland Park Village and serve as its first United States Postmaster general from 1847 until his death six years later. builder George Stephenson donated land for Highland Park Village which became one of America's first true suburbs after World War II when vast tracts of former Detroit neighborhoods were annexed into Greater Toronto Area municipalities including Oshawa and Scarborough while much smaller portions withinMuskegon County continued under local control until 2009 when they were consolidated into one municipality pursuant to article 3 section 8(a) Of The Municipal Code Of Ontario

Muskegon County was formed in 1814 from the portion of Michigan Territory that bordered Indiana. The county seat was at Cadillac, and it included parts of what are now Muskegon and Wayne counties. The first white person to live in Muskegon County was John James Audubon, who bought land near present-day Cadillac in 1824. He built a cabin there and made use of his lands for hunting, fishing, and farming. Other early residents include David Whitmore (1807-1892), who founded what is now Whitmore Lake; Isaac Ziegler (1798-1872), one of the founders of Detroit; and Ebenezer Scudder (1786-1854), one of the first white men to settle on Grand Traverse Bayou in present-day Lansing Township. During the 1830s, Muskegon County saw an influx of settlers from Illinois via Ulysses S Grant’s Missouri River Valley Expedition. These newcomers set up businesses throughout what is now Muskegon County including lumbering and farming operations along the riverbanks. By 1840, however, most residents had returned home to start new lives amid changing economic times around them. The population reached 1 million by 1870 but declined during the 1800s due to several factors including emigration to cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee; natural disasters such as floods caused by hurricanes or earthquakes; and Native American raids which took away many jobs opportunities for civilians living in rural areas. However, during Reconstruction following World War II manyMuskegonians played key roles in building post-war America both politically and economically – some went on to serve in high positions within government while others founded their own businesses or served on city councils or boards thereafter. A major event highlighting this period occurred when Judge Augustus Biddle Tilghman – later governor of Michigan – officiated at an election held on November 3, 1942 to select members for the newly operating General Motors Company boardroom located at its former Flint factory site across Commerce Street from downtown Muskegon where GM operated until 1978). Many Muskegonians were among those elected onto that important body which led directly to GM's renaissance after years OF struggle during World War II – beginning with its return to profitability following Roy Ford's victory over Chevrolet president George Wohlgemuth at the 1948 Detroit auto show!
The Muskegon region was first settled by the Agnatic-Saharan Native Americans in the early 17th century. They were followed by Europeans, who arrived in the area in 1697 and were known as the French Company. The land that is now Muskegon was part of Southeast Michigan until it was purchased by the United States in 1817 from Great Britain. The first town to be established was Grosse Pointe on the east side of Muskegon River, which became a principal center for trade with other parts of America. The town grew rapidly, and within a few years had become an important commercial center. It remained an important commercial center until after World War II when suburban development began to take hold and transportation became more efficient.
