As a result of this event, the United StatesArmy erected Fort Dearborn on Ottawa Street near where Custer's forces had burned down Fort Michilimackinac two years earlier. In 1837, JohnMuskegon founded what became Muskegon Heights with land he purchased from Potawatomi Indians east of present-day Cass Lake Road and north of Saginaw Bayou (now known as Gratiot Avenue). The town site extended along Cass Lake Boulevard westward until it reached Clinton Avenue south of Grand Rapids Boulevard before turning southeast towards its current location adjacent to Gratiot River State Park off I-94 about three miles south of downtown Muskegon Heights . Apostate Episcopal Church designed by architect Augustus SaintJohn Gilbert was completed in 1888 at 710 Main Street in downtown Muskegon Heights . It served as both church and community center for many years until it closed in 1978 due to financial difficulties caused by changes in religious affiliation among residents within MUSKEGON HEIGHTS COMMUNITY DIVISION OF THE CHURCH IN AMERICA . In 1902 local banker Halleck Worthy donated land northeast of downtown which became known as Worthy Park after him and later became home to Central High School , which opened September 12th 1903 under construction by local contractor Fred Atherton who also constructed nearby Eastern Market Place . The first school class ever taught inside MUSKEGON HEIGHTS PUBLIC SCHOOL #1 was held on October 8th 1903 when 11 students met at Mrs Juel Parish’s house across Clinton Avenue from Central High School for instruction founding MUSKEGON HIGH SCHOOL - ONE CENTRAL HIGHSCHOOL located today just east side address off Woodward Ave NW corner lot following realignment & consolidation plans approved December 15th 1953 Central High School building dedication ceremony took place March 5th 1954 attended by Mayor Foye Elmer Dewey & Commissioners Robert Cooksey McNeil & Clyde Nelson
Muskegon, Michigan was founded in 1788 by John Muskegon and his nephew, George. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a small mill. By 1814, the population had grown to about 100 people. In 1835, the first school was built in Muskegon. The town's growth continued until the opening of the Saginaw River Valley Railroad in 1856 which caused a decline in business at the mill. In 1895, Muskegon became an incorporated city with a population of around 2,000. Businesses revived when the railroad arrived and new factories were built in the city during World War II. However, after the war ended, economic decline followed as manufacturing jobs left for other countries. Today, Muskegon is a small community with a limited number of businesses and no major cultural attractions
