The Landing (now Muskegon Heights) known as "The Point" on the corner of Royal and Steele Streets was first settled by Spanish settlers in 1795. The first post office in Muskegon Heights was established in 1836. In 1846, John Prentice built a mill on the river near what is now State Road M-2. The town name changed to Muskegon Heights when it became part of the new state of Michigan. In 1901, control of the local water system passed from private hands to MIstate Water Company and later to Detroit Edison Company under an agreement between these companies and then-Mayor John Haines Sr.. In 1912, Muskegon Heights incorporated as a city under its own charter and adopted a flag with three points white (the color used today), blue (a variant of today's municipal flag), and yellow for status within municipality limits In 1968, demolition began on Strathmore Hall – one of downtown Muskegon Heights' most notable landmarks – after years of discussion about whether or not to demolish it due to problems with asbestos that had been discovered there during renovation work several years earlier. Eventually only some parts of Strathmore were demolished while other portions were left standing as a tourist attraction known as "The Old School."
