Muskegon Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Kalamazoo–Battle Creek Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community started as a small farmstead on the edge of present-day Muskegon Heights and Wasco Township on the banks of the Muskegon River. The first settler named it "Muskegon Heights". In 1836, John Larkin and his family purchased from Wm. Allred a tract of land that extended from what is now Muskegon Heights to near Battle Creek. Larkin renamed his new community "Muskegon Heights", in honor of President George Washington Carver who had funded many agricultural projects in southern Michigan during the 1840s. In 1846, Niles Eldridge organized a Methodist Episcopal church at what is now Erie Street and North Main Street in Muskegon Heights. In 1870, he donated land to build an academy which would become Kalamazoo State Normal School (now Kalamazoo Community College). When Kalamazoo became statehood in 1903, Eastern Michigan University moved from Detroit to its current location inmuskegone within two years. By 1930, there were only four homes remaining on what was then just over one acre (0.4 hectare) for each householder; by 1960 all but one home had been torn down and replaced with modern structures. Over time however some dwellings have been preserved as historical landmarks: One structure still stands as Cassell's Drug Store on Dearborn Avenue east of Ionia Road; another as Deitsch's Hardware store at 1009 Lansing Road between Elm and Maple Streets.

Muskegon Heights is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 by John S. Merrill and his wife, Anna Maria Merrill. The first post office in Muskegon Heights was established in 1892. The name of the original settlement was "Merrillville." In 1906, the town changed its name to "Muskegon Heights" after it became apparent that other towns with similar names had been established nearby and were suffering from competition from Muskegon Heights's exorbitant prices for land and buildings (the high price factor also helped to support its nickname). The village of Muskegon Heights developed around two churches: First Congregational Church and then Christ Lutheran Church. These churches served as the main social hubs for residents of Muskegon Heights until they were replaced by larger congregations in the late 1920s and early 1930s. During World War II, many local businesses participated in military production; some remain extant today such as Republic Aviation Corporation east side hangar #2 which still stands vacant today after years of being used as storage space by Republic Airlines Company-Dreiling Airport Development LLC.,formerly Michigan Regional Airport Inc.–and various other businesses across downtown Dearborn MI including Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge plant on Woodward Avenue near Eastern Market Street during that time period when Dearborn Township didn't have an airport like it does now
