Muskegon Heights, Michigan is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Muskegon Heights was established in 1837 by John Purdy and his wife Anna Haggerty as a result of their purchase of land on the east side of Mackinac Island from the Huron Indian tribe. This area would later become Muskegon Township. The town's first buildings were built on an undeveloped lot near present-day Park Street and Maple Avenue. By 1839, Purdy had renamed the township Muskegon Heights to reflect its new location. In 1847, Henry Sayers opened a tannery on Township Road (now Hegewisch Boulevard) just north of where modern-day Park Street and Maple Avenue stand today. In 1850, he sold his tannery to Ebenezer Cook for $3,000 cash. Cook developed it into one of the largest tanneries in the Midwest until it closed in 1865 due to competition from larger operations by George Wurts and others. An early post office was established at Muskegon Heights in 1847; it was discontinued in 1861 because no mail reached the community from Mackinac Island during that year's winter season due to ice conditions on that body of water (). A new post office was open at Harbor Springs in 1863; this location would serve as the town's main headquarters until 1922 when it moved to downtown Muskegon Heights proper.. In 1870s an agricultural society called Grosse Pointe Farms organized operations here including raising hogs, pigskinning, appleseed production, dairy farming and other crops.. A sawmill operated here until 1902 when that business closed because of low demand for lumber after wooden mills became more prevalent across Michigan following construction campaigns initiated by Governor James Kinsley.. The last coal mine operating here ended operations in 1984 after 113 years..
