The community was founded in 1872 as a result of the construction of the Michigan Central Railroad. It was named for General George Washington Muskegon, who served as a general in the American Revolution and then became an administrator of Native American land west of Detroit. In 1912, the Post Office moved from Grand Rapids to Muskegon Heights and it has been there ever since. The name "Muskegon Heights" comes from a Native American word meaning "happy hunting ground." The first post office in Muskegon Heights opened on December 12, 1872; it was renamed Kilpatrick on February 6, 1896 due to its new location within Muskegon Township and because Kilpatrick had been his predecessor's post office at this same address. The last post office closed on October 8, 1984. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,521 people residing in Muskegon Heights: 711 male residents and 551 female residents. There are no schools or churches within Muskegon Heights boundaries; all residents attend local services such as clinics and libraries. Most businesses are small businesses that do not have any classes offered outside their regular hours; most residents work full time jobs that require them to leave their homes early for work each day.

Muskegon Heights is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. The townsite was laid out in 1836 by John A. Daugherty and named for the Muskegon River. The first post office in Muskegon Heights was established in 1840. It was moved to its present location in 1847. The town of Muskegon Heights came into being when the Township of Muskegon (northwest of today's town) and the Village of High Falls were merged on November 1, 1884. In 1895, the village became part of the new City of Detroit after it had been incorporated as a city under State law that year. In 1916, David Sibley Smith founded Grosse Pointe Farms which now includes over 20 villages within its boundaries includingmuskegontown Centre-Muskegon Heights et al., just east of downtown Detroit proper on Holland Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Woodward Avenue where he built his country home called "Grosse Pointe". This area would come to be known as Muskegin Heights after him or simply "High Hills" because most homes there were built higher than any other dwellings within that radius at that time (today's schools are located much closer to ground level). The Post Office inmuskelon heights opened on October 15th 1840 from one small log cabin set up by John A. Daugherty with three others near what is now Haggerty Road and Old US 21 south side across from what is now White Castle restaurant; this cabin served until December 1st 1840 when it burned down due to weather conditions while also serving as a polling place for early elections held duringwpember 4th-8th 1840 Located right off current day Gratiot Ave between Wacker Ave & Ihrig Rd/Holland Dr w/old L&W RR Depot nearby
In 1847, Muskegon Heights was founded by John and Mary Muskegon. The Muskegon Heights post office opened in 1851. In 1870, the Muskegon Heights School District was created and it continues to operate today.
