One of the earliest firearm targets in Muskegon Heights was a stone wall located on the corner of Ninth and Washington Streets. This target was first erected by Captain John P. Buel in 1824 as part of his artillery exercises at Fort Dearborn. The target was moved to its current location in 1872 when it became part of the Muskegon Heights Rifle Range. The rifle range also hosted a number of pistol targets from the early 1800s until World War II, when all such activities were discontinued due to wartime regulations. Today, only shotgun rounds are fired from the range, which is primarily used for practice purposes. In 1924, Captain Buel purchased a cannonball that he mounted on an I-beam on the front lawn of his home in Muskegon Heights. This target served as one of several firearms targets located throughout Muskegon Heights during this time period and remains one of the most popular attractions within the community today. During World War II, Captain Buel's Cannonball Target became an importantTarget for military training operations in Muskegon Heights. After the war, ownership and use passed through various hands before being sold to local resident Jerry Kapp in 1951 who operated it intermittently until 1978 when it came into dry storage due to low demand from residents wishing to shoot at it; however, restoration work began soon after and it reopened to public shooting later that year! In 1928, a new gun range was opened at 7500 Woodward Avenue in Muskegon Heights proper. This new range remained open until it closed in 2003. At that time, it had been used by over 350 different organizations including the Muskegonsheets High School Gun Club and several other municipal entities such as Wayne Township and Washtenaw County government departments. In 2004, an increase in shootings led to the establishment of a citywide firearms Restrictions Enforcement Unit (CREU) within the City Manager’s Office pursuant to Section 6 of MI Penal Code § 827(a). CREU is charged with enforcement of state firearm laws and regulations withinMuskegon Heights through proactive patrols and investigations conducted through confidential informants warrants or search warrants executed under Sections 55210 et seq., 5640 et seq., or 5650 et seq.(1)

In 1847, George Watts and his brother James bought 640 acres of land near present-day Muskegon Heights from the Kames family. TheWatts family would continue to own land in Muskegon Heights until 1918. Muskegon Heights saw its heyday during the late 1800s when it was home to many large businesses and families. Many famous people lived or worked in Muskegon Heights during this time including Horace Greeley, Chester Aiken, and Henry Ford. The area experienced some significant events during World War I such as the Battle of Fort Dearborn which took place on October 16, 1918. The war also saw the creation of musketry ranges throughout the city by various companies in order to provide training for soldiers.
