Muskegon Heights is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-The Joseph L. Kostner School District. The first people to live in Muskegon Heights were three brothers who founded the village of Muskegon in 1836. In 1837, they sold their land to John McLaren and his family. McLaren built a mill on the stream that ran through Muskegon Heights and named it after himself, "McLaren's Mill." The mill was destroyed by fire in 1854 but was rebuilt and became a gristmill which still operates today. In 1863, Frédéric Sénateur purchased land east of the mill from McLaren for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $ ). He developed what is now known as Sénateur Square into an important business district for muskets and shotguns making this one of the earliest commercial areas inmuskegon county. In 1903, attorney general James Krasnow signed an act creatingmuskegon township which included Muskegon Heights along with other townships such as Van Wert and Port Huron. The township had no voting rights until 1940 when it was granted voting status by statehood statute (). Muskegon Heights is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first settler in Muskegon Heights was John Prentice in 1837. The townspeople were organized into a village on December 15, 1839 by the state of Michigan as part of the Town and Village Act. On January 10, 1840, they voted to name their new settlement Muskegon Heights after General Anthony Wayne's Battle of Fallen Timbers victory over George Rogers Clark's forces at that location on July 4, 1814. In 1847-48, several mills were built along the Ottawa River near present-day Muskegon Heights for manufacturing lumber and other agricultural products for local consumers. Growth in Muskegan Heights slowed during the late 1800s as waves of immigrants came to America seeking economic opportunity. After World War II ended with allies victorious over Nazi Germany and Japan, many Americans left for greener pastures in Europe and Asia. Some few remained behind to keep things alive until 1959 when a group of musketeers from nearby Battle Creek formed a self-contained country club called " Retreat" which sat atop an abandoned post office building on what is now State Route 9 south of town limits. Many members had retired or died before leaving their holdings behind including future Congressman Dan Kildee who served from 1987 until 1993 before retiring again to run for governor in 1998 (winning). In 2006 three sisters sold their house at 5115 W Summit Rd which had been used as headquarters by then Mayor Bob Snively since 1978 closed due to declining enrollment numbers; it reopened as the home office for Tony Fortunato's political action committee unofficially known locally as "Fortunato". A popular restaurant located adjacent became known variously as Fish 'n' Chops (a nod to original owner Harry Laughlin), Joe's Pizzaiola (owned by current mayor Bill Schulz) or simply Joe's which later evolved into Little Italy according to its current moniker - Tony Casino - following his election victory over incumbent Rick Snyder in November 2006 landslide victory seen nationally throughout much of upper Peninsula especially Flint where gambling has become an increasingly major industry despite claims by some opponents that this will lead to decline & loss of jobs within city limits while bringing tax revenue into city proper illuminates complexities surrounding rise & fall of certain communities within larger cities across metro Detroit area
The Muskegon Heights community was founded in 1881 as a farming village on the bluff overlooking the Muskegon River. The first residents were Norwegian immigrants, who built their homes and businesses on high ground near the river. By 1910, Muskegon Heights had become a large and thriving town with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1922, the Muskegon Heights School District was created when portions of Muskegon Township were merged into the new municipality of Sterling. The district served children from the townships of East Sterling and West Sterling as well as those living in neighboring communities such as Brighton and Grosse Pointe Park. In 1951, when Sterling became an incorporated city, MUSKEGON HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT was renamed to MUSKEGON HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT to reflect its growing status within the city. Today,Muskegon Heights is a vibrant community with many active businesses and cultural organizations including two theaters (the First National Arts Center and Red Rock Amphitheater), five churches (American Baptist Church, Presbyterian Church of America-District One, Methodist Episcopal Church-District Two, Catholic church-District Three, Congregationalist church-District Four), four libraries (Muskegon Heights Library District #1; Muskegon Heights Library District #2; Dearborn Public Library; North Central Michigan Regional Library System) and three parks (Wine Country Park/Lakeview Park; Highland Hills/Horseshoe Lake Park).
