It is located on the southern border of Muskegon County and is bordered by the city of Detroit to the north, Midland to the east, and probationaryoma to the south. The community was created in 1875 from land that had been part of Muskegon Township. The name Muskegon Heights comes from two early settlers named John Muskegon and his brother Isaac. In 1911 an account callers were able to order drinks by phone from a small hotel next door during prohibition; this service continued until 1939 when Prohibition ended nationwide. In 1917 a large lumber yard adjacent to downtown closed due to World War I military rationing; but within five years another lumberyard had been erected on what is now Fourth Street between Woodward Avenue and Gratiot Avenue - this location would become known as "The Lumber Yard" or simply "The Yards." During World War II much local production took place at two munitions plants operated by Chrysler Corporation: one near Third Street east of downtown (now Goodrich Road) and another just west of downtown (now Pennington Boulevard). A fourth plant operated briefly atmuskegontownelegraph pole near 4th Street north of Woodward Avenue during 1945 before being shut down permanently because of air raids; however all four plants would reopen shortly thereafter with new names: Deer Park Arsenal Ammunition Plant northeast of downtown (now Ford Drive), Cass Technical College Ammunition Plant northwest of downtown (Now Whitecourt), Wayne State University Ammunition Plant southeastof downtown (Now Eastman Road), and Battle Creek Arsenal Ammunition Plant southwestof downtown (Now Gratiot Avenue). In 1954 demolition began on most old buildings inmuskelongardeneriesouthwestofdowntowntomake way for new housing development which continues today asmuskelongardensoutheastofthedowntown(knownas"the revitalization district").
