Muskegon Heights is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 31,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mentor–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named after General Anthony Wayne and his troops who fought in the American Revolutionary War on the side of Great Britain. In 1836, Muskegon Heights became an incorporated village and was renamed Muskegon Heights Village when it annexed Dearborn Township to form Muskegon Heights Township. In 1898, Muskegon Heights Village merged with neighboring Auburn Township to form what would become today's Muskegon Heights City. On November 3, 1907, the city of Muskegon Heights merged with what is now West Bloomfield Township to create a new metropolitan area that included all of Grand Rapids County as well as parts of Mackinac Island and Huron County. As more people moved into the area during the 20th century, businesses started coming up with names for their businesses such as "Jello Belly", "Pizza Place", or "Taco House". Some still use these names today while others have been changed or discontinued altogether due to competition from newer establishments or changes in market conditions within their respective counties which has led to some mergers and acquisitions throughout history. One interesting example of a business that has continued unchanged for years but experienced significant competition is The Gourmet Shoppe which opened its doors in 1957 and remains one of muskegon heights' most successful commerical ventures. In 1865, George Washington Township was created out of part of Shiawassee Township and included parts of present-day Muskegon Heights as well as other townships in southeastern Michigan including Ottawa and Ionia counties. The township's first settler was John Hetherington who built a log cabin near what is now Park Avenue/Grand Boulevard on July 4, 1865 (). In 1876, when Jackson County was established within Michigan Territory, MUSKEZON HEIGHTS were annexed by Jackson County and became part of that county's population and government. In 1887, MUSKEGON HEIGHTS passed an ordinance proclaiming itself an independent town due to its high school (now Muskegon Hills Community High School) not being able to keep up with those in neighboring cities such as Grand Rapids or Detroit; this ordinance helped spur development around MUSKEGON HEIGHTS throughout much of the 20th century because railroad companies needed access to local labor for their construction projects throughout America during that time period). It wasn't until 1923 that MUSKEGON Heights fully integrated into Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area which at its peak had over 1 million residents within its boundaries including both commercial districts (northwest side) and residential districts (southwest side). The Muskegon Heights neighborhood of Detroit is one of the oldest in the city. The area was first settled by French and Indian traders in the 17th century.
