The name "Muskegon Heights" is derived from the Town of Muskegon's location on high ground, making it difficult for attacking enemies to approach and damage them; this also helped protect the community against raids by Native Americans. The first settlers were people who had moved from Canada in 1814. The town was founded as a wheat farm by Jacob Marchand, his wife Sarah and their four children around 1830. In 1836, Michael Haggerty purchased the land from Jacob Marchand and built a mill there which later became known as Haggerty’s Mill. John Swartz began farming in 1840 and soon developed a coal mine on his property that supplied power for local mills and homes until 1898 when it closed down due to over-mining. By 1871, Muskegon Heights had about fifty residents with one store and two residences that were used for agricultural purposes only or served as halfway houses for drunkards or criminals awaiting punishment or being transported to other states prison cells on trains overnight while they awaited trial or deportation hearings. Most people here worked in surrounding farms or businesses that traded with farmers in nearby towns like Holland (now part of Sterling), Albion (now part of Detroit), Clinton (now part of Farmington Hills) or Grosse Pointe Woods (now Grand Rapids).
