Mount Pleasant is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and within the Ottawa County metropolitan area. The population was 1,563 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant was one of several towns platted in 1837 as part of the Mackinac Purchase by United States President James K. Polk to improve trade with Canada. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was David Brown, who arrived in 1837 and named it after his ancestral home in England. He built a log cabin and raised chickens on his land until 1840, when he moved to nearby Strafford Township to join others in developing this area into what is now Mount Pleasant Township and its adjacent villages including Strafford (1840), Holland (1845), Highfield (1850), Allendale (1855), Clinton (1858) and Blue Hill (1860). In 1858, John Roemer became the first white person to live permanently in present-day Mount Pleasant Township when he moved from Holland to purchase two tracts of land along current-day Spring Street from David Brown for $8 per acre ($/acre). Roemer erected a farmhouse on that property which still stands today as Roemer's Home Place Museum; he also developed a lumber business here which continues today as Roemer Lumber & Hardware Company. During World War II, many residents of Mount Pleasant helped contribute goods and services to The United States military effort by working at various production sites around the city such as war plant Reliable Motors Corporation at Bay City Center and shipyards Ford Motor Company at Superior Harbor; these workers included Mrs. Martha May Alcorn, who worked for Reliable Motors for six years starting in 1944; vocational school teacher Alice Heller; electrician Harry Dolan; truck driver John Wirthman; millworker George Fenton; machinist Harold Kuhnkemeier; cook Willie Cooks (); fireman George Pritchard (); wheelwright Edward Wegner (); crane operator Harry Kapp ; water droplet collector Raymond Epps ; logger Willis Sellers (). Many residents also volunteered their time or resources through organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving or The American Red Cross directly related to war efforts such as work parties collected food items for troops overseas or delivering rations to soldiers' camps during campaigns like Normandy or Italy
