Mount Pleasant is a small town in the western part of the U.S. state of Michigan, about 15 miles west of the city of Detroit on I-75. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. It is located in Oakland County and is part of the Grand Rapids–Harrison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Ladd who arrived there in 1825 from Boston, England and named it after his home town, Mount Pleasant (now Westmount). A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1835, James Wolk built a cabin on what is now Main Street near where he now lives. He became known as "The Father" of Mount Pleasant because he spent so much time alone farming and ranching around his cabin. In 1836, Wolk married Mary Ann ("née" Smith). They had three children: James Wolk II (1837-1912), Mary Jane (1839-1915), and Anna Maria (1841-1920). In 1840 Isaac Beeson settled at what is now Maplewood Road near where he still lives today; he constructed a log cabin using parts from two preceding ones that he had been burned out from an unrelated fire six years earlier. Beeson later served as justice of the peace for Macomb County and also ran a sawmill and grist mill hereabouts for several decades until his death in 1905. He also founded Goodspeed Academy which remains one of America's leading private schools to this day! In 1850, David Snyder arrived at what is now Main Street from Battle Creek with his family; they soon moved to another location east of present-day Mount Pleasant due to bad weather conditions thereabouts during wintertime fundraisers for the Methodist Church being held then near by at that time.(Some sources claim David Snyder may have come here specifically to found Mountpleasant.) David Snyder erected a log cabin on what currently stands as Main Street just south of current day Stadium Drive; this structure served as their home until they sold it to their son Jacob Snyder Sr., Jr., circa 1915.(Jacob Snyder Sr., Jr., also founded Grosse Pointe Park High School) Jacob Snyder Sr.'s widow Rebecca resided here following her husband's death until her own death sometime before 1947.(Rebecca Hemenway eventually purchased/maintained land adjacent to her childhood home along Stadium Drive which she donated back TOMountpleasant Township)) During early summer days during late May or early June 1800s when Temperance Garden was open almost daily people would gather under trees along Muskegon River opposite current day Lake St Clair just east side old US Highway M 30(now Pettit Rd) between cutoff gates midstream orchard opening up minutes before public performance begin performers included Quakers numerous militia members & lovers ladies with fans & young boys willing to fetch any objects dropped offerings such as fruits baskets knives umbrellas
A post office was established at Mount Pleasant in 1881, and the town name was given to the mountain range that rises above it. The peak of Mount Pleasant is about 8,500 feet high.
