Farragut was posthumously awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during this campaign. Mount Pleasant is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ann Arbor–Washtenaw Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Mount Pleasant were John and Mary Barnes who arrived from Rhode Island in 1809. They built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. Other early residents were Isaac Goodrich (1811-1812), James Woods (1813-1814), Ebenezer Cook (1815-1816), John Weller (1797-1800), and George Stephenson (1792-1800). In 1827, George Stephenson donated land to create Mount Pleasant Township. The first settler to live in Mount Pleasant was Jacob Stockton who arrived in 1827 with his family from Vermont. He built a home on property that he donated to the township. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1840, Elijah Morse took over management of the Western Railway Company which ran through present day Mountpleasant Township and also through Battle Creek Township west of Mt Pleasant village site; this line later became known as the Michigan Central Railroad Company's lines northward from Detroit to Grand Rapids via Hollandale and Saginaw Junction racism prevented African Americans from traveling southbound on this railway so they could work their way upriver into Jackson County for work on White men's farms; however blacksmiths working for these white men did occasionally cross into Jackson County for necessary repairs This situation changed when Elijah Morse opened up what are now Woodward Avenue between Mt pleasant village site and Battle Creek Township allowing African Americans access not only to ride the train but also get their lunch pails filled with food before continuing their journey Northward
