Mount Pleasant is a small village in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 627 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was John Fenton, who arrived on July 8, 1816. He named his new land "Fenton Township", but it later became known as Mount Pleasant because of its high hill andpleasant setting. In 1825, Solomon Northrup built a gristmill on the Delaware River in what is now Mount Pleasant. Northrup became one of the earliest settlers in what would become Muskegon Heights and he name his mill "Northrup & Company". In 1828, John Sauer founded Sauer & Sons Brewery on Main Street in present-day Mount Pleasant. The brewery continued to be operational until 1938 when it closed down due to Prohibition. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1836, but it was discontinued two years later. In 1840, an academy was started by Reverend Rufus Woodruff and Mrs. Mary Ayer at present-day corner Second Avenue and Fourth Street in town; it lasted until grade school closure in 1912. The town's first library opened in 1861 with $5 from Mr. Halleck donated by local resident Isaac Morse Sr.. The library continued to be open until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts within Muskegon Heights Community Library District . In 1865, Captain Sidney Wirtz founded Wirtz Brothers Lumberjacks at present-day Third Street and Yellow Brick Road in town which continues operations today as Wirtz Logistics Incorporated . Captain Wirtz also donated land for a parade ground that served as training ground for musketry unit during World War II . As business grew larger around this time period, more homes were built including several churches including First Presbyterian Church which still stands today . Permanent roads were also constructed such as Third Street which serves as a main drag running through town center today while Michigan State Route 9 extends out into rural parts of neighboring Ottawa County
