The village site occupied only one block northeast of its current location; today's intersection of State Road 297 and Muskegon Avenue forms its nucleus. By 1840 there were ten dwellings and two stores in Mount Pleasant; by 1860 there were ninety-five homes and twenty-four businesses including three hotels/motels/ restaurant chains (the Old Holland Hotel, Keystone Inn & Palace Grill), four banks (First National bank, Merchants National Bank Building & Western Union Building), two churches (first Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1836, now First Baptist Church)and two physicians' offices; one dentist also active in this time frame; early residents likely procured dental care through personal visits to local professionals or via referrals from friends or family members within the community or outside it..

The first permanent settler in Mount Pleasant was John Hall, who came to the area in 1821. He built a cabin on what is now State Street. In 1826, Daniel Burr sold him land on the east side of State Street for $360. The Burr family lived in Mount Pleasant until around 1830 when they moved to Athens, Michigan.
