Mount Pleasant is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name " Mount Pleasant" comes from a small stream that flows through the town, which is also where many early settlers lived and some businesses were founded. The first European to visit what is now Mount Pleasant was French trader Étienne de Montcalm on his way to open up the fur trade in 1795. He named his settlement "Fort Amherst" after a place in Nova Scotia he had seen earlier that year. In 1801, when Great Britain acquired control of North America, Mount Pleasant became part of Houghton County as part of Upper Michigan Territory west of Detroit. In 1812, when Michigan became a United States territory, Mount Pleasant reverted back to Upper Michigan Territory and again became its county seat under Territorial Governor James Kile who renamed it "Oakland". County officials decided against adopting an official name for their new community because they felt it would sound too similar to other nearby settlements such asDetroit (then called Wayne) and Grand Rapids (then called Holland). In 1828, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, federal troops burned down Fort Amherst while settlers were inside; this event is generally considered to be one of the earliest examples of American warfare in what would later become Detroit. Jackson ordered General George Washington to burn down all but two buildings on Mackinac Island during an amphibious assault there on September 25th1832 as punishment for Native Americanattacks on white settlers that had continued since 1821; most historians believe this event was also retribution for Fort Amherst burning three years earlier only with no consequences given that no Indians were killed or captured by US forces then or since then.. By 1840OaklandCounty had lost all its land south of Cass Avenue eastward including much valuable forest land used by farmers for lumber production; however large tracts still remained within modern-day Oakland County inside present day Macomb Township east sideof I-75 between Romulus Road and White River Road.. In 1850 internal strife within US Congress led to creation of new territorial government known as Kansas Territory which included most present day Oakland County.. In 1861 when Kansas seceded from US weresentiments about Indian Country changed so much among many citizens in area surrounding Mtpleasant etc resulting in increased hostility towards whites especially those living near water sources like Presque Isle Lake although these events took place long before black residents moved into Mtpleasant specifically around 1880s following development around corner near current Water Street/Lake Street intersection .. One could say that even though racism persisted until quite recent times certain communities have managed better than others at avoiding social conflict due to their size & isolation
