The Mount Pleasant Rifle Club was organized in 1875. The club was typical of rifle clubs during the early days of the 20th century. The club met monthly and kept a variety of firearms, including pistols, shotguns, rifles and cannons. In 1881, the club became an incorporated society with a by-laws regulating dues and other matters. In 1907, the Mount Pleasant Rifle Club bought a large gunsmithery from John A. Farmer at auction for $4,000. The purchase represented a significant change for the club as it became one of the few organizations in Michigan to own a gunsmithery. After years of use by members as well as guest shooters, in 1922 the gunsmithery was placed in storage while new facilities were built on land adjacent to the clubhouse which eventually housed both rifle and shotgun ranges as well as community events space. In 1951, when membership was discontinued within Mount Pleasant Rifle Club due to dwindling membership numbers, ownership passed along to fellow rifle societies located throughout Michigan through state legislation allowing such transfers without prior approval from respective organizations. Since then there have been several efforts by various groups or individuals to restore or re-establish contact with Mount Pleasant Rifle Club including but not limited to: purchasing back property rights; creating commemorative items such as badges or T-shirts; restoring old equipment; occasional meetings/events where members can reminisce about past experiences; and even holding “ reunion” events (usually held around Memorial Day). With all these endeavors it is difficult to know exactly where things stand but overall it appears that there is some interest or hope that someday Mountpleasant Rifle Club may be restored back into its historical form (i.e., functions like any other active rifle society).

Washington had given them land on which to settle after he became President of the United States in 1801-02. In 1807, when Detroit was founded, Washington granted land to both towns; Mount Pleasant received Township No. 2 (later renamed Kent County), while Detroit got Township No. 3 (now Lapeer County). In 1813, when Michigan became a territory under Ohio control following the Mexican-American War, Mount Pleasant voted not to become a part of that state because it saw no advantage over neighboring Indiana in terms of trade or natural resources such as lumber or coalitions could form between Toledo and Indianapolis with Ohio's neighbors (the so-called " Big Three"). However, it did eventually cede its township boundaries to Kent County due to pressure from other residents there who desired more autonomy within their county than what they were receiving from Ohio officials at that time – something that would persist until 1912 when Michigan counties were created statewide through an act passed by Congress under President James Kwinney Jr., making all municipalities statewide rather than having individual township status).
