It was designed by architect George Wickersham Jr. and built at a cost of $2 million. It is the only civic center in Michigan with a modern design. In 1959, the Mount Pleasant Library began operations on State Street adjacent to the civic center. It replaced the old Carnegie Free Library which had been constructed in 1907-1908 for $5 million dollars from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The library has since been renamed after Mrs.(G.) Harold Macmillan, who donated funds to help build it).
The first known European to visit Mount Pleasant was the Jesuit Father Jean Baptiste de La Salle in 1795. In 1806, a group of French fur traders founded the town of Dumas on the summit of the mountain. The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center with sawmills, grist mills, and a bank. In 1818, General James K. Polk sent an expedition up Mount Pleasant to survey the new nation's western border. After reaching the summit, they discovered that there was no high mountain existing in that area and decided instead to make their way back down. A few years later, when Michigan became a part of the United States, Mount Pleasant became one of its first towns.
