The Mount Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1872. The first rifle was a .577 caliber Winchester Model 1871. In 1892, the club sponsored the first annual rifle shooting competition on the Wabash River. This event became known as "The Big Day". In 1896, the club sponsored the first annual pistol match at Battle Ground Park. This event became known as "The Little Day". In 1912, the club sponsored the first annual shotgun shooting competition on Whitefish Lake. This event became known as "The Big Game".
Mount Pleasant is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of Lansing on the border of Washtenaw and Grand Rapids Counties. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was David Hargrave in 1814. The town began to form around 1825 when traders and farmers set up shop hereabouts. By 1830, there were three stores and sixty-five residents living in what is now Mount Pleasant. In 1837, the federal government acquired land south of present-day Mount Pleasant for an Indian reservation. As part of this purchase, Washington Townshipite John Prentice donated thirteen acres (6 hectares) of his land to be used as a school site for the white settlers in that area. In 1840, $1 worth of candles were auctioned off at a public meeting at which Prentice was chairman to raise money for construction of a schoolhouse on the site where he had donated land. On July 8th of that year, work started on the first local schoolhouse and by 1844 it had been finished and named "Prentice School". The township continued to function as a separate entity until it merged with Washtenaw Township on April 16th, 1907. At that time, Mount Pleasant's population also increased from 581 to 711 people due largely to new arrivals from various parts of Michigan via wagon train rides across the stateline into central Michigan during those years. During World War II many factories were built within sight or sound of Mount Pleasant; these included Ford Motor Company's Plant No.#2 (now known as Dearborn Heights), Chrysler Corporation's Plant No.#5 (now known as Plymouth Hills), General Motors' Plant No.#7 (now known as Highland Park), and Alcoa Aluminum Works #3 (now known as Enterprise). However most workers did not live close by but traveled some distance away for their jobs because warfare closed down much of western Michigan during those years without any corresponding increase in production back home; this despite auto giant GM having its headquarters located just two miles away from Detroit Lakes Boulevard on Woodward Avenue! The town of Mount Pleasant, Michigan was founded in 1836 by George Washington Augustus Chilton. The town was named for the mountain that is located in the town. In 1847, the new school board decided to change the name of the high school to Mount Pleasant Academy because of this location. The first high school classes were held in a one-room building on Main Street. In 1860, a two-story frame building was built on North Avenue and it served as the high school from 1860 until its closure in 1984. A new four-story building was completed in 1984 and it became home to Mount Pleasant Academy High School from 1985 until its closure in 2004. Mount Pleasant had a population of 735 people when it first incorporated as a village in 1871. It grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime production at nearby Ford Motor Company plants and post-war growth due to suburban development around Manchester Airport (now Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport). At its peak, Mount Pleasant had over 1,000 residents and businesses. However, following World War II's recession, population decline and economic decline followed suit as manufacturing jobs evaporated along with many small businesses that closed their doors during the Great Recession including most of Mountpleasant's businesses which laid off their employees during that time period including hardware store owner Mr. Miller who told local reporters "I've been layoff three times now." In recent years there have been several efforts made by community members to revive some aspects of early Mountpleasant history such as hosting events related to pioneer life or exploring old buildings within walking distance of where those activities occurred like Hardside General Store which still operates today downtown serving fresh produce from local farmers every day along with baked goods from Mrs. Brewer's Bakery down the street open daily 6am-12pm since 1898) while also working on developing plans for developing land adjacent to mainstreet east between Griggs Road and Elmwood Drive vacant since 2001 having never been developed despite requests made by Mayor Albrecht who has stated "There's more potential here than we ever thought" In response thereto there has also been increased interest expressed within both city hall and outside organizations interested/involved in reviving downtown mountpleasant including a group formed specifically for Downtown Development through an agreement reached between MtPleasant Chamber of Commerce & Metro Detroit Economic Development Alliance dubbed “Downtown Revival Committee” consisting former Mayor Albrecht himself - Chairperson Tonya Harding -& 3 other members – Randy Wehner (Former President/CEO KPMG), Dave Bingham (President/CEO FirstMerit Bank) & Lisa Duggan (Mayor pro Tem). Their goal is develop strategic plan annually lasting 2 years outlining what could be done (& how much money would need raised) with full participation & ownership by all stakeholders thru fund Raising program
