Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage County metropolitan area. The name means "mountain peak." The first settler in Mount Pleasant was George Haggerty, who arrived in 1827 from Ohio. He built a log cabin on what is now West Main Street and named it Mount Pleasant after his home country, Scotland. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, James Kapp purchased a tract of land east of present-day Mount Pleasant from David Whitehill for $200 dollars cash and four oxen. Kapp named his new settlement East Branch Township after himself and founded the town on November 12th, 1837. In 1840, John Wilshere moved to East Branch Township from Greenville Township and became its first mayor In 1861, East Branch Township passed into incorporated territory of Kalamazoo County when it was annexed by that county as part of its western division. However, within one year that territory had reverted back to unincorporated status following an election campaign led by incumbent township officials seeking to continue running their own affairs without county interference or guidance; this campaign also saw the introduction of township democracy which would persist through to the early 21st century By 1870, much of what is now Mount pleasant had been developed as a result of Jackson's canal project: over 1 mile (1 kilometer) wide streets were laid out throughout most portions of the community while numerous frame buildings were erected for traders and other settlers living along those canalside thoroughfares In 1872 Ford organized a group including himself and others to purchase 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometers) north side lot on Sawmill Road near present day Sawyer Avenue for $2 US which they renamed "Ford's Mill". That same year he became president pro tem (the highest ranking position then held by an individual within Kalamazoo County) with authority over all civil government activities withinEast Branch Township

Mount Pleasant was a small community in the Kalamazoo area of Michigan, United States. It was located on the east side of the Grand River, about 10 miles west of downtown Lansing. The community grew up around a sawmill and gristmill that operated from 1817 to 1856. The mill attracted attention from travelers in search of lumber for their homes and businesses. In 1835, Mount Pleasant became the first town in Michigan to have an electric telegraph line routed through it. By 1860, Mount Pleasant had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with several mills and 50 residents. However, during the mid-19th century economic decline caused by technological advances led to many local businesses closing and poverty set in. The mill closed in 1907 while other local businesses went out of business at a time when transportation costs were high and there was little demand for goods produced by small towns. In recent years, efforts have been made to reopen the mill as part of a cultural revival around Kalamazoo County which includes activities such as arts festivals and picnics at various locations including Mount Pleasant Park near downtown Lansing
