Mount Pleasant is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,834 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Pleasant was Nicholas turbine maker Jacob Sibley in 1824. He and his family were among the first to homestead in what is now Mount Pleasant Township on land that he donated to the township in 1827. In 1850, James Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Mount Pleasant from Nicholas and began developing it into an agricultural community with a sawmill, grist mill, post office, schoolhouse and farmstead. By 1870, about 100 people lived there; by 1900, there were only 10 residents remaining. In 1875, Ford Motor Company founded its first factory north of Detroit in Mount Pleasant; it employed 30 people at its peak. The factory closed in 1937 but continued to produce vehicles for other automakers until 1978 when it was bought by Chrysler Group LLC and used as a model shop before being demolished in 2006; all wings were preserved as part of the museum complex which still stands today (now known as White Castle). Mount Pleasant's economy changed after World War II when defense spending increased and jobs grew at new plants such as GM's Research Park near Flint where car engines were turned out until they became available for export to Japan and other countries during the war years; this led to retention of many manufacturing jobs throughout most of the postwar period while downtown businesses went through a rapid decline due largely to competition from new ventures south of I-94 or east of Woodward Avenue within city limits which had arisen since 1945 when Detroit lost its industrial base following World War II suburbanization around Ann Arbor/Dearborn Heights/Warren Park/University Hills etc.). Today much has returned although some have left again: many small businesses have reopened including several very successful pizza places such as Joe's Pizza on Main Street (closed circa 1990s), All You Can Eat Chinese Buffet restaurant on West Highland Drive adjacent to Red Lobster once served by live rock bands nightly long ago - replacing an ice cream parlor - open late for dinner every night these days despite prohibition efforts against music played outdoors at night anyhow (the last show took place about 2 weeks ago), Applebee's located just past Piggies grocery store off US 131 next door across from "Guitar For Less" - open Wednesday thru Saturday 11am thru 9pm & Sunday 12pm thru 7pm & their own bar upstairs open till 2am nightly serving light snacks like wings & ribs etc., home made cookies every evening starting about 5:30 pm lately called "Driftwood Cafe", Crowne Plaza hotel just past Sears Tower off I-96 opposite exit 4 headed towards Mt Edwards National Forest - turn right upon entering - rooms are large with comfortable beds & cable TV overheads--a few restaurants nearby such as Just Add Water Grill on 7 Mile Road (& close by Old Country Buffet)serving great food comparable prices if not better than most chain restaurants--& lastly--Shake Shack located just beyond Walmart opposite I-94 next exit onto I-196 heading east across Lake Huron--a 24 hour fast food restaurant chain with high quality burgers priced well below average chains

Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan that was founded in 1834 by settlers from New York and New Jersey. It is located on the Shiawassee River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Lansing, the state capital. The population was 8,366 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant became a city in 2000. The town was named for Mount Pleasant Point on the Shiawassee River, which later became its main commercial center and served as an important stopping point for travelers travelling between Lansing and Grand Rapids. According to tradition, one of the first people to settle in Mount Pleasant was John Prentiss, who arrived there in 1834 with his family from Westchester County, New York. By 1840, when it had a population of just five people, Mountpleasant had become an important trading post for area farmers; it also hosted a school and store until 1850 when it moved to its current location on Highway 231 near where today's downtown stands. In 1875–76, local residents built a new courthouse which still stands today as one of Mount Pleasant's most popular tourist attractions. In 1800s there were no white people living east of Detroit so this area would have been black territory
In 1834, a group of men led by John Sibley founded the town of Mount Pleasant on the east side of the river. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time. In 1835, Mount Pleasant became a part of Michigan and was formally incorporated as a city. The city's first mayor was George Stephenson.
