The first inhabitants of what is now Mount Pleasant were Lenape people who lived along the Ottawa River. In 1795, a group of French fur traders from Quebec arrived in what is now Michigan and founded Fort Michilimackinac on Ontonagon Island, which they named "Fort du Lac." The British occupied this fort for three years before returning to Quebec in 1797. The fort was abandoned after that time and no humans lived there again until 1814 when settlers from Upper Canada arrived and began trading with the local Indians. In 1817, a man by the name of John Stevens started farming land around present-day Mount Pleasant on what is today known as Stevens Corners Road. He built a cabin here and named his farm "Mount Pleasant." By 1830, more than 100 people had settled here, including several families who took up residence nearpresent-day Goodyear Lake. Many residents early on engaged in agriculture; however, later generations transitioned to manufacturing products such as textiles and shoes. Some residents of Mount pleasant moved away during prohibition because they did not want their community associated with liquor sales which then flourished in other communities across America due to Prohibition efforts by state governments opposed to alcohol abuse From 1906 to 1971, most residents worked for Ford Motor Company located downtown (now Dearborn Square). However, some farmers like Bundy Ladds – owner/operator of Ladds Grocery – continued operations until 1984 when he retired after 43 years operating his store alone following an agreement between his family members that he sell all assets but keep some stores open for use as daycare facilities for community children .
