During World War II, Mountpleasant was one of several towns in northern Michigan that were bombed by the Allies during their war effort against Japan. A great deal destroyed in the bombing including most of the post office building and storehouses which still stand today (the building served as a museum until 2002). Mount Pleasant is a small city in the Macomb county of Michigan. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Macomb County and is bordered by Imlay Township to the north, Elmhurst Township to the east, and Wellston Township to the south. Mount Pleasant was established in 1837 as a village named for General James K. Polk. In 1871, it became a town under the name of Grand Rapids after its incorporation into Michigan. As of the 2010 census, there were 10,878 people living in Mount Pleasant proper and 2,955 residents living in unincorporated areas adjacent to or inside of it. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was John Ziegler who arrived around 1798 with his family from Germany. He platted what is now Mount Pleasant on land that he had purchased from David Whitney near where he lived on Canisteo Creek. The first post office was established at Mount Pleasant in 1837 and served until 1850 when it was moved to downtown Grand Rapids due to population growth there. During World War II, many residents worked at Ford Motor Company's Rouge plants outside of town; some still work at Ford today as retirees or contractors In 1871, when grand rapids became an incorporated community under state law following its annexation by Michigan from Washtenaw County, most inhabitants relocated westward within then- existing Macomb County limits towards other communities such as Detroit and Royal Oak which were developing rapidly at that time - both towns having become major industrial centers owing much to their location just beyond reach for most people except those who could afford homes within walking distance or directly across street from factories/markets etc.. Residents of earlier settlements (especially those settled before 1800) generally limited themselves largely theretofore unknown but burgeoning rural residential areas immediately surrounding them rather than expanding outwards into thinly populated area now known as Metro Detroit suburbs... Most notable exception occurred along Canisteo Creek Floodplain between Maplewood & Wellston Villages where numerous dwellings (~50%) developed along newly formed stream channel floodplains resulting primarily from increased water levels caused by melting snowpack associated with precipitation during winter months following extensive local freezes well above ground level over large portions of central Lower Peninsula....... Notwithstanding this relatively shortcomingsome researchers have nonetheless argued persuasively that not too much has changed since pre-Industrial era.... [1]
Mt. Pleasant was a small community in the Township of Mount Pleasant on the west side of the Mackinac Bridge, just east of downtown Detroit. It was founded by Germans in 1836, and became an American settlement in 1847 when it was annexed into Michigan. The village had a post office from 1849 to 1862, and a school from 1851 to 1860. It declined after 1861 when the bridge was built, and died out completely by 1880.
