The first permanent settlers in what is now Mount Clemens were Nicholas and Susanna Kapp from Holland Township on the opposite side of the River Rouge. There are some oral histories that say they arrived by canoe or raft and when they could not find suitable land to purchase, built their house on a hill overlooking the then-cities of Detroit and Lansing. In 1837, Nicholas Kapp's son John went into partnership with his father to trade goods with the Indians along what is now State Road 11 in present day Mount Clemens. In 1840, John married Anna Ford from New York City and continued trading with the Indians until 1845 when he founded what would become Ford Motors Company which became one of America's largest automobile manufacturers. In addition to his business activities as well as farming land near present day Mount Clemens, John also constructed a two story wooden cabin known as "The Cabin" for use as his home during business trips back and forth between Detroit and Mount Clemens. In 1872, George Hickey bought 20 acres of land adjacent to present day Mount Clemens from Nicholas Kapp for $5 per acre ($ in ). He used it for farmland until 1924 when he sold it to Jens Ludwig who operated it until 1959 when it was donated to Wayne State University where it currently stands as one of their academic buildings

It is the county seat for Washtenaw County and one of two cities in that county. The first settlement at Mount Clemens was made by fur traders from Hudson's Bay on July 12, 1803, during their exploration of what is now Michigan Territory. The town was named for General James Clemens, who had led an expedition against the Ottawa Indians in 1802. A post office called Mount Clemens was established in 1805, and became a community under the name of Rockford after a postmaster there died in 1807. The name Mount Clemens was anglicized to Mount Pleasant when it became part of Washtenaw County. The arrival of railroads in the late 19th century changed how people traveled throughout Michigan and Washtenaw County. Businesses grew along railroad tracks, providing goods and services to residents living near these facilities. In 1906, a group of businessmen created the City Council to manage affairs within Mount Pleasant while they developed plans for developing downtown into a thriving commercial center. The council also authorized building construction on what are now State Street and Washington Avenue inside city limits beginning in 1907; this development led to increased traffic congestion around downtown which eventually forced closure of several blocks around 1911-12 as parkland was acquired adjoining State Street between Second and Third avenues to create Battery Park City (now Central Park).
