Mount Clemens is a small town located in southwestern Michigan, about 15 miles east of Battle Creek. The community was founded in 1837 by fur traders and their families. The first post office was established in Mount Clemens on October 4, 1837. The population of Mount Clemens was 1,953 in 1860 and 2,811 in 1910. In 1912, the community became a city under the name of Battle Creek. The population decreased to 615 in 1960 and 514 in 1990. The history of Mount Clemens began with the fur trade. Early settlers were primarily Irish Catholics who came from County Clare (now Fermanagh) to take up land around Battle Creek because it was available for cultivation and because there were no other places nearby where they could establish themselves as farmers. In 1837, fur trader John Dickey purchased 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of Mount Clemens from the Muskegon Indians for $5 per acre ($35 today). He named his new settlement after his uncle Captain James Kempton's hometown of Clearwater on Long Island (New York). By 1840, Canadian entrepreneurs had joined Dickey and started trading with American Indians along the Mackinac River at what is now downtown Battle Creek. Under pressure from Ottawa to open up Canada's resources to American merchants more effectively, President George Washington signed legislation on December 12, 1793 establishing the United States Exploring Expedition under Lieutenant Colonel James Cook that surveyed much of Canada north of Quebec City including present-day Michigan Territory. On July 5, 1815 Anthony Wayne became governor of Upper Michigan following its admission into the United States as a state on February 14th that year; he recommended that Detroit be moved from Windsor Township to Saginaw Township so that it would have a better chance at becoming an industrial center due to its location between Lake Superior and Great Lakes watersheds which made goods available all over North America without having to go through Toronto or Montreal first.
