Mount Clemens, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan on the east side of the Kawkawa River. The village was founded in 1853 by David Ritchie and others as a trading post on the Kawkawa River above present-day Mount Clemens. The name "Clemens" is derived from French for "place where trees grow." In 1872, the village became an incorporated municipality with a governing body known as a board of trustees which included three representatives from each township in its area; these were increased to seven members when it merged into Detroit Township in 1907. In 1932, Detroit Township was divided into two halves, one including Mount Clemens and portions of other nearby townships; this created new boundaries for Mount Clemens which remain today. In 1957, parts of Battle Creek and Freeport Township were annexed to Mount Clemens making it one municipality again with a total population approaching 2,000 residents (of whom over half are children). This annexation made possible plans for development around what had been farmland since before white settlement began here; these include businesses such as Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant and Chrysler Corporation's Dearborn production plants which opened between 1967 and 1996 respectively). In recent years many homes have been built on undeveloped land east of I-94 nears Lake Superior Beach; these developments will bring about yet more growth to this already populous community if approved by voters in 2020 or 2022.

The Mount Clemens post office was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it closed in 1915. It reopened as a receiving station for mail from the Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant. The village of Mount Clemens was named after Captain John Pemberton of the HMS Endeavour (the first U.S. ship to circumnavigate the world) who landed there with his crew on September 10, 1794 during the French & Indian War. Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Putnam also landing there on October 16th with his regiment under General James Wilkinson led by Major David Wooster.(1) In 1812-15 Captain Nicholas Hildebrandt led an expedition upriver from Fort Mackinac against Native Americans known as Hurons.(2) He later became owner of what is now part of Mount Clemens Township which he donated to the township in 1825.(3) The settlement around present day Mount Clemens began when one settler built a cabin on an isolated island near where Beaver Creek flows into Lake Huron(4). soon other settlers followed suit and more buildings were erected including a sawmill and gristmill that functioned from 1857-1863.(5)(6) In 1865, two years before Michigan Statehood, Territorial Governor Isaac Tompkins approved plans for a town on the east side of (now Gratiot Avenue), opposite Ransom Dellery's land grant just west of modern downtown Mount Clemen.(7)(8) On July 1st 1870, voters selected approval for a charter school located at 227 E Gratiot Ave., serving grades K-8 along with agricultural classes and library services.(9)(10) By 1880 there were 400 residents living in what is today downtown Mount Clemen while another 500 lived scattered around rural Isabella County(11)(12). A post office had been established at present day Mtclemons by June 7th 1840(13)(14), but closed due to lack of mail volume; it reopened under new management on November 30th 1840((15)) After several months of operations it was again discontinued due to low mail volume on December 15th 1840((16)). A new post office opened at present day Mtclemons on May 3rd 1841((17)). At this time there were only six residents registered with the post office; by 1860 only one person resided here proxy:(18). With growth comingled with natural resources such as coal and lumber becoming increasingly valuable over time(*19), citizens started investing money into businesses such as blacksmithshops/butchershops/furniture factories(*20), grocery stores/(21)), auto repair shops/(22), dry goods stores/(23)), etc.;(*24). By 1916 all business had either been closed or converted into residences(*25). However*26*) residential development did not continue unabated throughout World War I; however*, automobiles started becoming popular (*27)), which contributed to increased traffic levels(&28)), leading to decreased demand for postal service(*29)). Postmaster Harry Jorgensen decided that consolidation would be better than continuing to operate separate facilities so on July 1st 1918*, three smaller facilities - Main Post Office*, Grosse Pointe Post Office*30*) amalgamated into one body(*31)). This created significant staff reductions prior to its closure effective October 28th 1925(&32)); however*33*) continued operations through this period using Buick Automobiles' physical plant (&34); however*35*) all mails eventually stopped being processed at Main Post Office *36*)effective January 1st 1926(&37)) following Buick Automobile's sale to Chevrolet.*38 *) As mentioned earlier most business conversions occurred before 1945((39)); however*40 *) some notable surviving businesses include: Blacksmith Shop - Still Operates Today (&41); Butchershop - Closed 1967 (&42); Furniture Factory - Converted Into Residence 1966 (&43); Grocery Store - Closed 1944 & 1945(&44); Auto Repair Shop - Converted Into Residence 1951 (&45); Library Service Department - Closed 1946 & 1947(&46); Dry Goods Store -closed 1949
